This bulb was a gift to my husband from Santa and it has bloomed twice this month- each time with 4 blossoms. I love them! I struggled with the colors here- could not get the right red. Time to get more paint! Also the last time I painted one of these it was in oils- a whole different game. But I like it and it was good to do a flower this morning. Its a funny time of year I think-we are in limbo.

My dear late stepfather, Rollin W. Bailey, wrote a valentine poem every year for the Norwell Mariner when he was in his eighties.

Mosaic commission work in progress

This is the start of a half scale painting design for a stained glass mosaic I am designing for Abington Town Hall- for the town's 300th anniversary..the arts council will actually do the mosaicing under my guidance.
It will hang over the main door on the inside of the building.
There are three panels, this one is the middle one (hard to get a good photo) the finished panels are approx 12"x68"( middle ) and two panels 12"x31" on either side.
I will depict the Island grove in this one ( see photos below) and the other two on either side will have a beaver( town mascot) hydrangeas, strawberries and shoes. Not quite sure how this is going to go but it's a fun challenge!

Ok I will admit it- I'm not a football fan. Embarrassed to admit it, I don't get it. I do love the camaraderie of friends and family that have gathered in my tv room this season, and I love all the festive food!

In the third quarter I had to get out of there and took a walk down to the creek and sat on the dock with my dog, gazing at the moon and the stars. It didn't seem so important then. We are all humans after all, some of us are just a little more elated today than others. I'm happy for them! Of course, theres the Celtics, Bruins and Red Sox ...

I had the pleasure of doing an artist demo yesterday at the Furnace Brook Middle School in Marshfield with fellow artists Mary Mc Sweeney and Jeanne MacFarland..
Unfortunately I had my phone restored right after that and lost all the photos on it that I had taken during the demo. I did have the amazing Mary McSweeney send me the pictures of her work- she is so fast and fun to watch. I had the kids help me "prime" a panel and then worked into it.
The kids were so sweet and complimentary. We loved it!

Had a great time this weekend in the big apple!
Loved seeing the outsider art show...Outsider art , or folk art,is by self taught, visionary, naive,and sometimes mentally ill and disturbed people. These paintings are a couple of my favorites. We really enjoyed seeing our daughter Markie and her boyfriend Byron, and visiting the Moma was awesome too! What a fantastic city .

Back in my youth I used to dance every week- sometimes twice a week- and now unless it's a class, or a wedding ( rare) or bar mitzva (even rarer) I hardly dance at all.
Zumba is fun, but I feel I have to follow along and sometimes I don't want to!
On Friday, March 9 , 7-9 PM (or 10- tbd), I am collaborating with Laura Harvey (partner in crime), Marnie Bacon ( music and movement expert) and Tori Brega ( atmosphere and lighting genius) to create an event at the North River Arts Society called "Just Dance"!
No judgments, No follow along steps. Low lighting and awesome inspiring music of all genres. 2-3 hours of jumping around. Thats it. Only $5 bucks to come!
Dance like no one's watching.
Dance like Elaine on Seinfeld ( me)
Roll round on the floor that I will personally clean.
or don't dance! Just hang out.
Come and have fun with us!
If it is a success we hope to do it on a regular basis.

When my youngest daughter Maddie was home for the holiday break she did this beautiful mixed media of the Buddha.

She is back at school now at the College of Charleston and was on CNN the other night! Here she is on the left, with Anderson Cooper and her roomate Julia on the right. It looks fake but trust me it's not!

I painted this one for a little gourmet and wine store called Bo-Tes- it's on Main street in Norwell in the old post office.
I laminated a print of this on plexi and it is on the top of the wine refrigerator there.
It's fun to go there- lots of interesting foods and wines and the owners Tom and Mary are great.
I painted a couple of murals there too ( just saw they have bit of one on their website) and might do another soon.
It really snowed a lot here yesterday- so much that my boss called and told me NOT to come to work.

I found this on in the attic stacks-painted one summer day at my our childhood home I imagine.
I am blessed with a sister- we are closer now than we were growing up, I was the annoying little sister than ( still am probs!)
My sister is funny, irreverent. smart, a real Martha Stewart, makes yummy bread and loves her cats and her husband- in that order...well not really.
She's pretty and has her own unique fashion style.
She is an graphic design professor - put herself through grad school later in life.

Her home is always a pleasure to visit- inspires me every time. We love to tease and kid each other and she is the first to point out my typos ( I do them on purpuss to make her happy -her hee)

This is the second of three small panels I did hoping to get them into the "IN and OUT" show at the South Shore Art Center.
Well, they were "OUT" and I will admit the rejection stung! But it's part of the deal with juried shows- and here is a great thought about rejections...

After submitting for a juried art show and being rejected, it can be quite a negative experience to the artist. Sometimes this will lead the artist to doubt their artistic talent, their technique and their overall sense of well being.

Artists’ should understand that the decision as to who is accepted into a show is a very subjective and personal decision made by the juror(s). This decision simply means that your art was not appealing to that judge or person. It is as simple as that and nothing more. What is rejected by one juror for an exhibition might be selected by another juror for a different show.

I have had some of my “best” images rejected for a particular show that I was sure that I was going to get into, only to be rejected. While at the same time I had those same images out to another juried competition, only to find out that I won! Why and how does this happen? It is a personal and subjective decision made by the judge for that particular show. It is really as simple as that. Possibly a different piece of art or a different style of art may have made the juror look and select your art for that show. Who knows? I do not believe that you could ever find out why your art was rejected. The bottom line is that they did not like it, for whatever personal reasons that they had at the time.

The good news is that every artist has experienced some rejection of their art and that rejection is all part of the game. When an artist is rejected for a show or by an art gallery I think it is a good time to remember why you create your art. Your art is a personal reflection and expression of you. Through your art you are communicating what is inside of you and if people are “listening” great and if not, who cares! If your sole reason for creating your art is to “get into shows” I think you need to reevaluate your reasons for creating your art.

To most artists we love what we do and the inner joy and feeling that we get when we do, what we love to do. If some juror or judge just doesn’t “get” what we do, remember, he’s just not that into your art and that is nothing personal!

Don’t ever give up creating, trust yourself and create your art for you, not for some judge.

Yesterday's visit to my friend Caroline's house in Plymouth- - this is her back yard! We went for a glorious walk in the woods. Lucky her and lucky me!

Tried my hand at popovers- never have done this before- they were pretty good but need to learn a few more tricks. Wonder if they would work with whole wheat flour?

I spent this last weekend at a wonderful retreat house for women. The price was fantastic. the food healthy and delish, the accommodations were excellant. There was lots of laughter, deep discussions, art projects, power walks, and yoga!
It was actually at my dear friend Carol's house only 15 minutes away but it could have been across the country- I feel refreshed and rejuvinated. I recommend this as a way to reset your clock. My weekend ended at the Healing Path in Pembroke at a meditation group.
I have been struggling with what to paint for my upcoming show at the South Shore Art Center.
This one came out of friday nights frivolities.

Painting Demo at Linden Ponds(work in progress)

Yesterday afternoon I visited Linden Ponds, senior community, to work with the residents in the art program.
I had NO clue what I was going to paint so I just winged it ( wung it?)

The first lady who came in had little golf people on her shirt so I put one in, then a gentleman said his favorite flower was an orchid ( looks like a demented balloon animal) another's fave animal was a dog, and the obligatory house , tree and sky. One lovely lady had amazing shoes so golf lady got those
( replaced the golf club with flower) It was fun- I painted it mostly from the side so they could see.
One of the workers suggested a babbling brook with a six pack so thats the black ribbony thing.
It was fun and random...I think they enjoyed it- the ones who were awake anyway! (:

I painted this at the free Sunday workshop. It was a quiet, peaceful gathering of adults at the museum.
This demo was done with three colors- cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue.
Today I am doing an acrylic demo with the folks at the Alzheimer program at Linden Ponds in Hingham.
I have prepared a canvas with black gesso- other than that I have no clue what I am going to paint... which reflects pretty much where I am at these days.

Organizing a lot of my art and finding gems- and taking pictures of it with my iphone( the new 4s has an amazing camera- makes it so easy!)
This watercolor was done a few years ago in a class at the Wellesley College conservatory with Susan Swinand.
I loved the class and wish it was closer. Painting in greehouses in wintertime is a wonderful- if you want to try it and are local to me the folks at Kennedy's in Scituate are quite accommodating.
There is a free workshop at the Art Complex Museum today for anyone that wants to try watercolors- I'm bringing in plants for our subject matter. All materials provided,
1:30-3:30. Let me know if you want to come! ( talk about last minute- sorry!)

Oldie but goodie

This is a sketch of Oliver- he lived with us for 14 wonderful years. I could never be mad at him for sleeping in our chair because he looked so darn cute! There was an corgi in the news yesterday, named Ole ,who's owner was killed in an avalanche, but miraculously the dog was able to walk out.
I dropped three small paintings off yesterday for the South Shore Art Center's "IN and Out" show.
I will be waiting for the news whether any are "in" or OUT. I forgot to take photos of them- oops.
I am in a big cleanout mode.
HAVE to part with lots stuff. Why is that so hard? I know I'll be happy with clean and open space but getting there is challenging, not quite a hoarder, but sometimes I wonder...

I hope you all had a great holiday and happy New Year.
It was great for me to have my girls home, however brief.
I did this painting over the course of the week, at my kitchen counter- like I used to do when they were little girls, still home. I miss those days sometimes. I didn't realize it so much then- such is life and motherhood.
This is my piece for this month's girls just wanna paint challenge- the theme is "local landmarks" and although the James was already a theme for October I felt like painting it. My mom was a librarian there for many years and I took the girls for piano lessons every Thursday. It was a special time.
I had fun painting this!

In a cozy barn turned studio behind her home, Sally Dean Mello finds peace and inspiration daily for her projects and artistic creations. Appointed with warm and functional vintage furniture, storage units and eclectic collectibles, the room evokes imagination, originality and a passion for local surroundings.

While ensconced in various tasks Mello reflected on her passion, current endeavors and inspirations.

“I have found that this area is full of subjects to paint, moments to be captured and visions worthy of being painted. What a joyful thing to have this purpose to accomplish something like this every day. Something like flowers is a symbol of creativity and beauty that is fleeting. It is something that should be captured,” she said.

Her artwork is her career, her pastime and her salvation and she spends time each day contributing to her craft with expertise, discipline and zeal.

“I often challenge myself to create something according to a schedule,” she said. “I find it helps me with a rhythm and challenges me to look everywhere for subject matter, causing me to see things that may be small and intricate but very beautiful or fascinating. It is a professional and personal experiment that can be highly rewarding.”

Dean is known locally for creating ornaments portraying area landmarks. This holiday season, she created the annual collectible ornament depicting the historic Winslow House blacksmith’s shop.

Now in its 15th year, the collection had humble beginnings. When Dean’s daughter was in kindergarten the school she attended was searching for a way to raise funds. Dean offered to create an ornament during the holiday season, which mothers then carried in a basket and sold door to door.

“It did surprisingly well,” Dean said. “We were happy with the results and it began my tradition of creating one each year for a charity or nonprofit organization.”

Now residents and collectors anticipate her annual creation from which proceeds are donated to charity. She was scheduled to appear this past Sunday at the Marcia Thomas House to present a lecture about the newest addition to her series.

Previous designs Dean include the Winslow House, Webster Estate, Veterans’ Memorial Park, newly renovated Seth Ventress Building, various area churches, Brant Rock Fish Market and the Marshfield Hills General Store (see page 4 for more information on the Marshfield Hills General Store ornaments). Organizations sell the items and donate the proceeds to a selected charity.

Originally, Dean created each ornament from inspiration to completion, signing and numbering each one. As her collection and reputation expanded, more units were required and a museum art company now manufactures the pieces. Dean designs the original and sends it to be manufactured. The pieces are then returned for her approval after which she adorns each one with sparkles, then signs and numbers them. Ornaments are still limited and collections never exceed 500 items.

“It has become a tradition each year to create one for a Marshfield landmark or organization,” Dean said. “I especially love the first steps which are the most creative part. I am always thinking ahead of what I will do next. I have no desire to mass market these or become a major manufacturer or retailer of these ornaments. I like the idea of keeping the projects philanthropic. To me it represents a way I can use my creativity to give back to the community. That is how I see creativity; as something to be shared for the pleasure and benefit of others in the world.”

Dean was selected in 2008 to create an ornament for the White House Christmas tree by Congressman Bill Delahunt at the request of First Lady Laura Bush. The project initiated by Mrs. Bush compiles a collection to represent each congressional district in the nation. Dean traveled to Washington that year to represent Massachusetts’s 10th district.

In addition to her ornament series, Dean maintains a blog featuring almost daily artwork. “By motivating myself to accomplish certain things, I establish a routine and the blog holds me accountable,” she said.

She has tackled various challenges including a successful attempt to create images of 365 flowers. “It was fun to do,” she said. “In addition to looking for various blossoms, I studied certain patterns and fabrics and found flowers in lots of unexpected places.”

She is active at the North River Arts Association, which she considers a source of inspiration, fun and camaraderie. “It began as a simple community gathering,” she said. “It has grown into a place where there are classes and social events. We also have opportunities for people to explore their creativity. It is not intimidating, but fun and supportive. Anyone interested in trying out various things can have a good time.”

In 2012, Dean said the Association plans to have community dances. “It will be like a wedding but without the ceremony,” she said. “There will be good music, a chance for some great exercise and a good time with friends and neighbors.”

Considering the South Shore and Marshfield a deep-rooted artist’s colony, Dean is grateful for 20 happy years in her North Marshfield home. Growing up in Norwell, she ventured to Boston and then California for a time but eventually returned to her roots in the area. She credits her artistic passion to the generations of artists in her family and is pleased her two grown daughters, Marklin and Madeline also have been blessed with creativity and an affinity for the artistic world.

‘There is something about this area that is inspiring,” she said. “There is so much beauty that surrounds us; it is no wonder artists of all sorts are attracted to live here. It is not necessarily a widely known area for artists but that keeps it natural, quiet and authentic. Even if I don’t see a real picture or subject I can imagine it.”

To illustrate her technique of interpreting thoughts and scenes Dean pointed to paintings on the barn wall of deer and birds in the woods, a series she had completed recently.

“Some things are so beautiful and fleeting it is almost as though you have imagined them anyway,” she said. “Appreciating and capturing small and intricate images or sights that people might relate to, but not have realized how rare and lovely they are, is something I love to do and share with others.”

North River Arts FUN!

Last night was another fun night of creating and being with great folks at the NRAS. Laura Harvey does a great job at making art accessible and fun for all- even those who have never picked up a brush.
She purchased plastic chargers plates and had them primed and ready to go- and tables laden with papers, glue, glitter, paint, scissors, gold leaf and other ephemera- we were like kids in kindergarten!

It's the most Wonderful time of the year

The holidays are here- shopping, cooking, decorating, creating ,wrapping! Anticipation, hope, deep spiritual feeling. It's a time for compassion and giving to those who have little or nothing.

I love Christmas, as did my Mom. This year I'm doing the little things with more intention and trying not to stress. It all gets done, but why be a mental case until then?

Here is my coping strategy. Hope you all enjoy this season, and beyond. Any moment can be the most wonderful time really- just have to notice it and be in it.

This painting was started at Kelley MacDonald's Rhode island studio on Sunday- we had a spontaneous painting session together while my husband was watching the Pats game with his brother in Bristol. It was so fun ( and the Pats won!)

People often ask where the imagery comes from in these wacky paintings- this one is from a sketch I did from an African sculpture at a recent MFA visit. I made up the rest.

For some reason my post was published again yesterday- sorry! I think it was a typo I fixed and it republished ( and I am SO good at making typos!)

These are ornaments I am having so much fun painting and embellishing - join in the fun making these or decorate plates at the North River Arts society next Thursday- you do not need to be worried about whether or not you are an artist- its all about fun!

Daily Paintworks Challenge

My husband's sister Karen had a lot of family to her house friday and she provided everything for us to make gingerbread houses. She pre-baked 13 sets of houses for all of us to make. It was so much fun!
I am so grateful for this person in my life- she's one of the the happiest, most loving person I know.
She came as a bonus when I married Al, in fact, his whole big family is pretty awesome!

Yesterday I was the "crafty feature" at a friends daughters birthday party. We made sardine can shrines
( one kid thought they were supposed to be coffins (: !) That reminded me of a time when my daughter Markie and I made cool collaged valentines with cut up newspaper for the design element- for all 27 kids in her 2nd grade class- they were so cool- until we realized we had used the obituary page to make them!

Anway it was fun yesterday . I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Charleston!

Had a whirlwind weekend in Charleston SC- I went down to visit my daughter Maddie- and see her awesome performance in the college of Charleston's acapella group. It was so great to be with her and dine, shop and take in the sights. Maddie has her own blog here.
I am so glad I went- it was a perfect weekend. I am in love with the place!

I showed my students again the fun spritz and drag technique to make the upper image- its really fun and they all did great! Below is the last nasturtium from my garden,with the ginko pattern... hate to see them go but spring will return again.
I cut up a really old painting that was hanging around and attached it to a tree in my back yard- I want to make more of my trees have faces. My husband was a little sad- he found the "remains" of the painting in the trash... oops... sorry!

The weekend was great- I'm very happy. Thank you to all who were able to stop by!
I realized, however, that I made a commitment to get 80 8"x8's done by the 8th- and have 8 left to do.

Yesterday my oldest daughter Markie moved to Brooklyn. What a great place for a 22 year old!

Here she is in front of her apartment. Looks like there should be a doorman- but no- and its a 4th floor walk up... we got to know those steps pretty well ( two trips to Ikea later!). I am so happy for her and I know she will be a successful young hip city girl.

Today it's back to business for me- in my studio, painting trees. A little bird is perched-considering its next flight. Hope to see you Saturday or Sunday at my

Mask Making Day!

Saturday's workshop was a blast- the kids (and a couple of the parents) made these cool masks in my studio. I have decided to donate 10 percent of all my sales at my upcoming open studio to the AANE,
Aspergers Association of New England, so these types of programs can continue. Art is a connective and healing process. I am grateful for Catherine Mayes for bringing these kids to me. She does many other types ofactivities with them as well. I have learned a lot working with her and it's fun!

I have 6 teens coming to make masks today from the Asbergers Association of New England.

These kids are awesome, and they help me to get really organized in my studio. I want them to be able to make a mask and finish it in the 2 hour session, so I made one yesterday to see if it could be done.

Using construction paper it's possible to finish with color as the final layer.

I had all these ginko leaves I had preserved in glycerine and water-( thanks Martha Stewart!) and with the leftover paper mache mix I glued them to a piece of rice paper.

I showed my class last night the technique I used to do these forest paintings- everyone did amazing pieces!
This morning I added the deer to mine. Yesterday's post mentioned that we are going into Daylight savings time- my editor (my sister) corrected me- we actually return to standard time in the fall. I thought it all was about saving daylight- but apparently we only do that in the spring and summer.
My sister has an eagle eye for all typos and corrections.Thats why I love her ! Here's to you sis-

I did these over the course of two sessions- yesterday was busy- I started a new yoga class in the morning . If I don't post the blog by 10 AM it doesn't get to my subscribers till the next day. Sometimes that is good because it forces me to work fast, but I wonder if I should change the setting ( if only I knew how!)

This is after Degas- one of my favorites in his bather series. This piece is at the Hill- Stead museum in Hartford.Ct... a must- visit place. Their permanent collection has many jewels.

I have not seen the show at the MFA yet- cannot wait to go.

This is me thinking about pumpkin pie and all the parts that are needed. This crisp weather is making me think about pot roast and pie! I better get out and walk so I can justify the eating....

I kept the pine needles in the picture- love the texture.

#53 and 54/80 James the Rhino and Trick or treat

This was last nights demo at the James Library's annual open house- my challenge group "Girls Just Wanna Paint" is showing there opening December 2- hope you can come to the opening!

Lisa Daria brought this sweet rhino and we had fun painting it. Distracting venue- lots of chatting going on and there was a GREAT jazz band playing up stairs- which included the great Lars Borror Chapell on bass.

Also- to clarify- yesterday I wrote about my dollar store palette-I actually only use the containers from the dollar store- my paints are mostly Golden acrylics- very permanent and high quality ( not dollar store paints!)

Last night I went to Cambridge to the Lizard Lounge and saw my good friend Carols nephew perform (blonde guy on the manolin) in his band the Deadly Gentleman

It was was really fun and such a great crowd- the music is joyful.

On our way home we saw this buck in the woods- you can barely make it out...but he had huge antlers.

Yesterday I received news that I was accepted by the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset to be a gallery artist! I never seemed to have my act together when it came time to enter- this time I did!

I knew I needed a new phone since I stepped on mine recently and cracked it and this morning I drove to the apple store to get it at 8 AM - I hate crowds. I had a dream about an Elton John protective case- it was black with gold stars, it dosen't exist- YET.I got a red one, looks cool with the white phone!
I will admit I am phone addicted...but the camera feature is awesome and a few other things as well like Siri- talk text.
Anyway I love my toaster and all things toasted!I guess its a gadget day for me. Might even take my vacuum cleaner out but I'm not sure i feel THAT crazy today...

Its really dark and rainy today- I thought I was going to paint one of my still pretty zinnias plucked from my garden, but things changed. This panel is one that a kid had started painting and abandoned last summer- I cropped it to 8"x8". The colors that were there inspired this scene. Also I am thinking about my oldest daughter Markie who just arrived at her grandfather's farm in Hawaii.
And, of course, Jane Filer inspired me to paint the colorful stuff. She gave her talk yesterday at the Art Complex- she is just the best. We had a great turnout!
She is on her way back to NC today...

Yesterday the weather treated us to another gorgeous day- and how lucky were we- we had planned this outing to my friend Michele's cottage on Saquish 2 months ago! It is not easy to get here- the roads are sand and rock- our driver Deb ( who also grew up on Saquish) was our fearless driver.
No way could I have done it! We spent a perfect day together. High school friends are great and I am so glad I still have these connections.

The cottage- re- built 10 years after after a lightning bolt blew up the original house...

This week I am installing an exhibit of paintings at the Art Complex Museum. It is the first time I have curated a show- I selected 3 artists- Jane Filer, Susan Swinand and Ed Trejo.
Each of these artists have delivered and the work is wonderful.
There will be an artist talk/slideshow with the amazing Jane Filer on Wed, October 12, (10:30 AM coffee and mingle- 11:00 gallery talk)

First class in my studio happened last night- here are our charcoals- after a mini lesson on perspective.
The I read them a children's story. These girls ran with it! I set up a still life with two houses and a geranium cutting - look what happened!

back to basics- lesson on perspective

I am still going to paint today- but this is my morning work. I am teaching a class tonight and we will explore PERSPECTIVE.
Its pretty cool stuff once you get it.
There is a spot open in the class tonight- I have 6 sessions scheduled on alternate Wed evenings- 6:30-9:30 at my studio. $25. a sessions includes materials.
We will do a short lesson each time, then draw and paint whatever you want, from still life set ups, photos or imagination.

Another made up forest scene. I have never had much luck painting from life in the woods, making it up seems to work for now, but I am planning on sitting in the forest soon and giving it a shot. I love the quiet in the deep woods, as long as my dog is with me for protection.

This sketch was done on my way back from Provincetown a few weeks ago. We were on our way back, but decided to stop at cafes along route 6. We were afraid that we would hit traffic, it being a Saturday, but as it turned out, we were fine- most people had evacuated for the pending hurricane Irene. Not us! We were drinking coffee and sampling the cape cod fare!

This one is a mishmash of stuff along the road to Pittsburg.There could be a painting here!

Road Trip #34/80 and 35/80 watercolors on paper- 8"x8"

My siblings and I took an unexpected road trip to Pittsburg this week- a 600 mile journey- to see our dear Uncle Joe, who is not expected to be around much longer. We saw cousins we rarely get to see, one I hadn't seen in 29 years, and met their kids. We spent an entire day in a hospice home, an beautiful place for families to be together with their loved ones as they prepare to die. A wooden sign with the words"Embrace the Journey" are hanging just inside the entry. Designed by two hospice nurses, the home feels like a retreat- families can sit in the beautiful living room, cook and eat in the kitchen,(my sister made bread for everybody) there's a small chapel room, a dining room, screen porch.A gently curved glass corridor, filled with light is for passing through to get to the area where the patients are. On either side outside the glass are beautiful gardens. The patients rooms are spacious and comfortable. We gathered all together, and were in and out all day, seeing Joe. He was pretty much asleep, but we knew he knew we were all there, and acknowledged us. I have never experienced any thing or place like this. There was a lot of love in that room and in the whole place. My Uncle Joe loved a party, and we were having one, we got so loud we actually got shooshed!
There were little blue books all over the house, explaining the process of death. This was written on the last page.
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of a white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says:
"There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was where she left my side and she is able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says "There, she is gone!" There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout"Here she comes!"

And that is dying.

The gentle rain sounds sweet on my studio rooftop as I paint this, the ping ping ping of the drops hitting an overturned tin pot makes a rhythmic melodic sound. The smell of the salt marsh is strangely appealing. I think the equinox's approach has upturned things a bit- hoping to settle down soon.
No idea what I was to paint today, and in my recent cleanout I found a journal I made from 1982. Here is the sketch that inspired me...
